Biochar application is a win-win solution, improving crop yields, increasing soil organic carbon, and primarily reducing global warming potential, depending on the biochar’s properties and soil pH.
An effective agricultural management practice
It has a large surface area, stable physical and chemical properties, a rich porous structure, and surface functional groups. It has been proposed as a highly efficient material for agricultural soil amendment. Biochar application is considered an effective agricultural management practice to mitigate the threats of climate change and ensure global food security.
A negative carbon footprint
PURAENVIRO biochar, with a 90% carbon fixity, is superior to other biochars, providing greater carbon dioxide absorption per kilogram compared to other types. The extremely low oxygen level makes it very durable and provides significantly longer sequestration.

How to use biochar?
There are multiple usage techniques and dosages, however, we can identify different methods of use depending on the sector.
| Horticulture: Biochar can be used as a substitute for or incorporated into non-renewable substrates such as peat. It can be used underground, combined with fertilizers at a concentration of approximately 35%. |
| Viticulture: Biochar can be applied at a dose of 6 tons/ha and mixed with compost, 40 cm from the row and 30 cm deep: it reduces water stress and increases canopy density. |
| Arboriculture: Biochar can be spread underground (in rows and between rows) along 5 cm at a rate of 5 tonnes/ha. |
When used alone as an amendment, the recommended amount is approximately 2 to 5 tons per hectare.
In addition to its use as an amendment, biochar can be used for the treatment of manure and leaf litter (reduction of odors and greenhouse gases), as well as as an additive for composting, silage, methanation or even feed (positive effect on digestibility, mass increase and nutrient intake).

The use of charcoal has a double benefit
| Biochar increases CEC (cation exchange capacity), thus improving nutrient retention and preventing leaching. |
| It also allows for water retention (even more so in coarse soils) and provides a habitat for microorganisms. |
| The retention and availability of water and nutrients, as well as the presence of numerous microorganisms, allow for improved plant growth and, consequently, better yields. |
| The addition of biochar, with a pH between 7 and 10, rebalances acidic soils. |
| The stability and resilience of biochar in the soil allows for the creation and maintenance of long-lasting fertility with a single application. |
